Has Jordy Clasie played his last Premier League game in Southampton colours? He could return to the Eredivisie this summer.

Jordy Clasie’s miserable Southampton career could be about to come to an end with AZ Alkmaar confirming their intention to sign the Dutch international midfielder, as reported by NH.

The Saints made a habit of signing players from the Eredivisie during Ronald Koeman’s time in charge but, unlike Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic, Clasie failed to settle in English football after his £8 million move in 2015.

The diminutive midfielder appeared to struggle with the pace and power of English football and he rapidly fell down the pecking order once Koeman left to take over at Everton in 2016.

De Telegraaf reported that Clasie is desperate to seal a permanent move away from St Mary’s after spending the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Feyenoord.

And AZ director Max Huiberts has confirmed that the 27-year-old would be very welcome at the AFAS Stadium.

“Sometimes there’s a chance to get this kind of boy. The coach (Arne Slot) has been in contact with him. Jordy Clasie has a one-year contract with Southampton. We have to wait and see how this develops,” he said.

Slot himself has since confirmed that Clasie is interested in joining AZ this summer, admitting that he has spoken with the 2014 World Cup star. Clasie is apparently ‘enthusiastic’ about the prospect of signing for the Alkmaar outfit, as reported by the Daily Echo.
