The Newcastle United striker was speaking to a Spanish radio show about Barcelona’s interest in him.

Spanish striker Ayoze Perez has admitted that he was aware of Barcelona expressing an interest in signing him last summer, as reported in an interview on Cadena Ser’s El Larguero show.

Many players would have jumped at the chance to join the Catalan giants, but Perez had no desire to return to Spain.

Newcastle United benefitted from the 23-year-old’s decision, as he helped the club make their return to the Premier League by scoring nine goals in 36 appearances, and he is focused on the Magpies’ upcoming season.

“I only think of Newcastle, it is true that there was interest in Barca but I am here and we have to keep working,” he told Cadena Ser.

For Perez, it was just frustrating that the wins were not forthcoming for Newcastle United as they dropped to the Championship, and it’s no surprise that the youngster appreciated the interest in his services.

“Thank God there was interest from several teams. For a footballer it is important. It was a disappointing year due to the relegation.” he said.

“Things did not go as I wanted but there were still some clubs interested that knocked on the door. It’s a good thing but I have my head in Newcastle and we’ll see what happens in the future,” he added.

Rafa Benitez’s decision to stay at the club is also something that Perez was delighted to hear. Perez is optimistic about prospects for the coming season. In a recent interview with the Shields Gazette, Perez said: “Under Rafa, I think the future will be very interesting.

Perez has a target from his 2015-16 season, when he last played for Newcastle United in the Premier League. Then he scored six goals from 34 matches, he’ll be pushing hard for a better return in the coming campaign.
