Ayoze Perez has paid tribute to Steve Black after Newcastle United announced his passing this morning.
BBC Sport reported today that Black had died aged 64.
He had a couple of spells coaching at Newcastle, the first of which came during Kevin Keegan’s ‘Entertainers’ era and the second more recently when he was part of Steve McClaren’s backroom staff.
Perez was part of that same Magpies squad and here’s how the 28-year-old – now at Leicester City – reacted to the heartbreaking development on Twitter this afternoon:
Black also worked with Newcastle Falcons in rugby union and developed a long-lasting relationship with Jonny Wilkinson.
Regarding football, he also worked at Fulham, Sunderland, QPR and Huddersfield.
The Geordie-born fitness coach and famed motivator left Newcastle almost six years ago, in March of 2016 following McClaren’s sacking at St James’s Park.
In May of that year he said to The Daily Mail: “I was first at Newcastle at 12 years of age which is a while ago now. Newcastle have been through a tough period but it’s a club close to my heart. It’s a good relationship – I haven’t ruled out returning to the club in the future. They’re a team I would help out anyway. I would help in any way I could.”
