Ayoze Perez comments suggest a shift in mentality at Newcastle United

Newcastle United failed to win against Southampton in the Premier League last weekend.

Newcastle United attacker Ayoze Perez has spoken about a big difference at the club from last season to The Shields Gazette.

Perez has said that he and his teammates were disappointed to have dropped two points at Southampton last weekend.

The Magpies played out a 2-2 draw with Southampton away from home at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League last Sunday.

Rafael Benitez’s side took the lead twice, but on both occasions the Saints equalised.

Picking up at St. Mary’s Stadium is not an easy feat, but Perez, who can operate as a forward or as an attacking midfielder, has said that he and his teammates were disappointed at the loss.

Back in April 2017 when Newcastle last faced Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium, they lost the Premier League game 3-1.

“We are not happy to be leaving here with just a point, and that’s a massive difference from the last time we were here,” Perez told The Shields Gazette.

“You can see the big difference straight away. Some people might say this is a lesser squad, because we had a lot of big players that season, but everything about the way we are is different.”

Perez’s comments suggest a shift in mentality among the Newcastle players. The 24-year-old’s comments suggest that the team are not happy with anything less than a win in matches against teams such as Southampton even away from home.

The Magpies got relegated to the Championship at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, but this campaign they are aiming to finish in the top 10 of the Premier League.
