The striker has struggled for game time at Newcastle United this season.

Newcastle United striker Ayoze Perez has admitted to the Chronicle that it took him time to adapt to the Championship.

The striker has found himself out of the first-team picture this season as Dwight Gayle has established himself as the first choice at St. James’ Park.

He has improved in recent weeks, though, bagging three goals in his last three games, including an impressive display in the win over Ipswich Town.

Perez’s form is a drastic change from the beginning of the campaign when he struggled to show the kind of performance levels that had earned him rave reviews in the past.

And he has admitted that it did take him a couple of games to adapt to the different style in the Championship.

“The Championship is a tough league. You have to adapt. The league is tougher, it’s much different,” he told the Chronicle.

“Before the season started I had been told about the league, it’s tough and physical. When you play in it, you realise how intense it is and how physical it is. It took a few games for me to adapt to the league.”

The striker will now be hoping to get more regular game time in the coming months as Newcastle look to make an instant return to the Premier League.

The Magpies face ten games in all competitions before the turn of the year meaning Rafa Benitez’s rotation policy is likely to be firmly in effect over the next two months.

That is likely to see Perez and fellow striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has four goals in two games, given their chance to impress and the Spaniard says they are all ready to take their chance.

“Every one of the strikers is ready,” he added.

“As soon as Rafa gives us the chance to play, we have to be ready. Every striker is scoring goals and the team is doing really well.”
