When Tottenham took Marcel Lavinier on trial, few could have expected to hear much more about him.
Spurs took a look at a couple of defenders over the summer, taking Lavinier and Keenan Ferguson on trial.
Tottenham chose to sign both players on free transfers and Lavinier has been the source of some big news today.
Jose Mourinho has named his squad for Tottenham’s Europa League knockout campaign, and Lavinier has been included despite never appearing for the first-team at Spurs.
So just who is Lavinier? Here’s some information about the youngster who could soon make his first-team debut for Spurs…
Lavinier was born in London, but has caps for Portugal at youth level, meaning he can play for either country moving forward.
The 20-year-old is primarily a right back, but does have history playing at centre back or even as a right midfielder, with his versatility surely appealing to Jose Mourinho.
Lavinier came up through the Chelsea ranks, racking up two goals and seven assists in 38 Under-18 games, as well as one goal and one assist in 15 Under-23 outings.
Despite his impressive record, Lavinier was released by Chelsea at the end of last season, so Tottenham didn’t have to pay a penny for him.
He has been featuring in both right back and left back spots for Spurs’ Under-23’s this season, seemingly catching Mourinho’s eye with one goal in 12 games.
The youngster could now play in the Europa League in a shock rise, with today’s announcement a major step forward for him.
