Leo Bonatini earned a rare start in the cup tie against Leicester City on Tuesday night – and some Wolverhampton Wanderers fans on Twitter destroyed him for his performance.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side bowed out of the Carabao Cup in the third round after losing on penalties, but the manager did name a side without a number of their star men.

The two teams were locked goalless at Molineux after 90 minutes of action, before Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward was the hero on penalties to help the visitors win 3-1 in the shootout.

Bonatini was given a start in the cup with teammate Raul Jimenez rested, but did very little to put forward his case to suggest he should be the number one centre-forward.

The 24-year-old Brazilian is definitely low on confidence right now and rarely threatened the Leicester backline.

He was eventually substituted off by Nuno after 83 minutes of action and it seems most likely he will return to the bench for Premier League fixtures.

Bonatini has just one goal so far during 2018 for Wolves and the striker looks miles off the pace he set in the first half of last season.

A selection of fans on Twitter were critical of the striker’s display, with one even suggesting he should be offloaded in January.

Here is some of the reaction to Bonatini’s latest performance:
