Alan Shearer has taken to Twitter to react after Newcastle threw away two points against Watford in the Premier League earlier today.

What’s the story?

Well, thanks to Allan Saint-Maximin, Newcastle took the lead against the Hornets in what was a crucial game.

The relegation six-pointer was immediately made all the more important after Norwich took an early 2-0 lead against Everton at Carrow Road.

By the sounds of it, Shearer was very nervous, hence his “roar” of relief when Saint-Maximin netted in the 49th minute as Gary Lineker tweeted.

The goal moved Newcastle above Claudio Ranieri’s side and out of the relegation zone into 17th.

However, Eddie Howe and the Magpies suffered heartbreak in the 88th minute when Joao Pedro netted an equaliser for Watford.

The game finished 1-1, meaning Watford stay in 17th place, while Newcastle slip down to 19th after Norwich beat Everton.

You can see Shearer’s reaction to the draw below.

Clearly, the 51-year-old is devastated.

Where do Newcastle go from here?

Well, Howe can’t simply continue to throw money at the problem.

Both Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood started against the Hornets, and were largely anonymous – the tactics were concerning, to say the least.

A resurgence in form starts from the back, and it is imperative that Newcastle begin to keep a few clean sheets to build a solid foundation.

Then, that will hopefully settle the likes of Wood and Saint-Maximin down, as they know any missed chances up top are less likely to haunt them.

Having said that Newcastle can’t just throw money at the problem, another centre-back is certainly needed.

Even Jamaal Lascelles – arguably Howe’s best option in that department – was embarrassingly out-jumped by Pedro for Watford’s equaliser.

Howe needs to sort his backline out in training at Little Benton, and fast.
