In the case of Alfie McCalmont, he has had to go out on loan to League Two side Oldham Athletic for first-team experience.
The Northern Ireland international, 20, has made two first-team appearances for Leeds but is now making a name for himself at Oldham.
McCalmont has bagged seven goals in 30 games from midfield this season, and his latest goal was quite the effort.
McCalmont hit a superb strike to help Oldham beat Exeter City 2-1 on Tuesday night, smashing a first-time left-footed volley into the net via the crossbar.
That’s the kind of quality Leeds are looking for in their young players, and with McCalmont heading back to Elland Road this summer, he will be desperate to impress.
He certainly caught the attention of Michael Owen, as the former England striker took to Twitter to brand McCalmont’s goal ‘amazing’.
Recognition from Owen will no doubt great for McCalmont, and with double figures now in sight, he will be looking for a strong end to the season.
