Ian Wright was all for the performance of Manchester United captain Harry Maguire during England’s latest European Championship victory.

Speaking on the Wrighty’s House podcast, Wright had nothing but praise to throw at the Red Devils defender.

Maguire started England’s 1-0 win over the Czech Republic on Tuesday, his first competitive action of any kind since early May.

It was a dominating display from the burly centre-back, combining composure in possession with authority out if it.

According to WhoScored.com, no player on the pitch attempted more passes (71) or had more touches (81) than United’s skipper.

His return to fitness and form has arrived at just the right moment, as the Three Lions face Germany in the knockouts.

Hats off to Harry

Wright hailed Maguire’s re-inclusion and his importance to England going forward in the tournament.

“Can I just say, Harry Maguire and his ball progression is awesome,” said the former Arsenal striker.

“Harry Maguire’s passing yesterday and the way he played, it showed why he is is integral to what we are doing.

“So integral. He was brilliant. He was fantastic. It’s the kind of performance, that makes you think to yourself ‘right, that makes me feel calm’.”

The compliments didn’t stop there.

Emile Heskey called Maguire ‘fantastic’, whilst Jose Mourinho explained the 28-year-old made England steadier.

Martin Keown shared the same view as Wright, also praising the Old Trafford centre-back’s reassuring influence on the team.

Clearly, the general consensus is that Maguire makes others around him more confident, especially from a defensive aspect.

Which will be crucial when the German’s visit Wembley in a few days’ time.

They scored six goals in their final two group fixtures, compared to England’s two.

But Southgate’s side are yet to concede, a solidity that’s been further cemented following Maguire’s homecoming.

As long as there are no penalties, the Three Lions have a roaring chance of progression.
