Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is being linked to a new club – and it’s a bit of a surprise.
According to Record in Portugal, Benfica are keen to hire the Argentine as their next head coach – and have already opened talks with him.
Pochettino was Tottenham manager for five-and-a-half years until being sacked in November following a steep decline in results.
Since then, he has been linked to Manchester United, Real Madrid and Newcastle United, but now the Portuguese giants are reportedly keen.
The 48-year-old led Spurs to a Champions League final only last year and is generally considered an elite manager.
Benfica, who are second behind Porto in the Primeira Liga table, are not really an elite club any longer and here’s how Tottenham fans reacted to the idea of their former boss going there.
With respect to Benfica, this is definitely beneath Pochettino.
If the Red Devils or Real want a change of manager over the next six months, he’ll be their first call and Pochettino will know that.
So it seems unlikely that he’d be tempted by whatever project Benfica have going on right now.
