Southampton should seriously consider a move for the Newcastle United star.
Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino will surely be looking to bolster his options at St Mary’s this month, with his side looking nervously over their shoulders at the relegation zone.
The Argentine is heavily armed with cash following the £75 million sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool, and it could be argued that the Southampton squad needs investment more urgently in the forward department, rather than the defensive area.
Saints legend Matt Le Tissier urged his former club to sign at least one attacking midfielder this month, when writing a column for Sky Sports:
“Well Southampton clearly need a centre-forward and I would say we probably need one or two players for that spot in behind the striker to inject some creativity.”
With this in mind, the south coast outfit should consider a move for Magpies ace Henri Saivet, who is available for just £5 million this month, according to the Mirror.
Whilst the Saints are flush with cash, the owners have never been frivolous with their money, so the opportunity to bring the Frenchman to St Mary’s for a bargain fee might just be one that is too good to turn down.
The 27-year-old can operate anywhere along the front-line, but is most comfortable when deployed in the number 10 role just behind the striker.
He possesses pace in abundance, and his direct style of play would definitely offer Southampton something extra in the final third.
With the January transfer window well and truly underway, this could be one for Saints fans to keep an eye on, and if Pellegrino does manage to bring Saivet to the club, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for Southampton.
