Glasgow Rangers arguably need to strengthen their defensive options at Ibrox, while their rivals also need to bolster their numbers at the back.

Bruno Alves of Rangers arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

When Rangers consider their priorities ahead of the summer transfer window, it seems highly possible that strengthening their options in defence will be right at the top of their list. And it is a similar story for Scottish Premiership rivals Celtic.

The Gers’ most recent partnership of Russell Martin and Bruno Alves is not working. The former is only on loan, while Alves is well into the twilight of his career, and it seems to be showing. Amongst the other options, Fabio Cardoso has endured a disappointing first season at Ibrox and David Bates’ future remains up in the air with his contract set to expire this summer, as shown by transfermarkt.

That could leave Ross McCrorie as the one recognised centre-back option that the fans seem to trust, and many of those supporters would perhaps prefer to see the academy graduate used in a holding midfield role rather than at the heart of the defence if possible. Meanwhile, the situation is hardly much better across the city at Parkhead.

Kristoffer Ajer has been superb this season and Jack Hendry looks to be an encouraging prospect, but there are major question marks over the likes of Jozo Simunovic, Marvin Compper and Dedryck Boyata.

So for both clubs, signing a new defender this summer has to be a priority. And one of the options that they should perhaps consider is Den Haag centre-back Wilfried Kanon as he continues to attract attention from a number of top flight sides.

The Sun recently reported that Everton, Villarreal, Real Betis and Eibar are all keen on the Ivory Coast international, and he is set to be available for just £2 million.

For that kind of price, Celtic and Rangers may be able to compete with the Premier League and La Liga sides for his signature – and they should absolutely try to.

Kanon has featured regularly in the Eredivisie in recent years and has helped Den Haag put themselves in contention to secure one of their highest league finishes this season.

He also has 21 caps for his country and is capable of playing at left-back if required. So when Rangers and Celtic come to pick out potential defensive targets for the coming months, they should certainly keep Kanon in mind.
