Rangers are set to bring an influx of players to Ibrox this summer after appointing Steven Gerrard as Graeme Murty’s successor, with the English Football League likely to be one of their main scouting pools.
Though the Gers managed to score plenty of goals in the Scottish Premiership throughout 2017-18, they still struggled to break down the shaky defence of Old Firm rivals Celtic.
They have the goalscorer and the wingers, though doubts over the iconsistency of Josh Windass continue to arise. Son of Dean, Windass scored 18 goals this season but is prone to going missing throughout 90 minutes.
Rangers need a player, for a fee that does not remove a huge chunk from Gerrard’s transfer budget this summer, that can create something out of nothing and not just perform when the team is doing well.
It should see Gerrard consider a move for Peterborough’s Marcus Maddison, who the Nottingham Post claim is available to sign for the knockdown figure of £2.5million this summer.
Though he scored only 12 goals this season, Maddison offers huge versatility by being able to play in any position in the final third. Normally a number 10, he can also play out wide and up front.
But most importantly, Maddison’s assist-to-game ratio is second to none. This season, he almost created one goal every two games with a whopping 23 assists in his 53 league and cup outings.
Maddison is said to be interesting Championship trio Leeds United, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, but surely the chance to play under Gerrard would outweigh the second-tier trio.
Though £2.5million would be a big commitment by Rangers, Maddison is the kind of player that can unlock Celtic’s defence and take the Gers a step closer to closing the gap between the Old Firm rivals.
