The defender has been struggling for regular football at Spurs.

Austria head coach Marcel Koller has been showing his support for Tottenham Hotpsur defender Kevin Wimmer today, as national team fans doubt his credentials for their country.

Wimmer performed poorly as Austria lost to the Republic of Ireland in their last outing and scored an own goal against Wales back in October.

But Koller is backing Wimmer to become a mainstay in the Austria team, but admitted his club status at Tottenham Hotspur was not helping him. He told Laola:

“We want to support him in the coach team and help him in difficult times. I am convinced that these experiences will also bring him further.

“Accordingly, we hope that we will have a lot of joy in the near future.

“He is always such a saint. He is a player who does not play regularly, but has the ability to play at this level, and of course he has to try to get a step further.”

Wimmer has struggled for first-team football at Spurs so far this season. He made his first Premier League appearance of the campaign last weekend as Spurs drew 1-1 in the North London derby with Arsenal. Wimmer scored an own goal and was booked in a poor performance.

That was just his third appearance for Tottenham this season after falling behind Cameron Carter-Vickers in the pecking order at White Hart Lane and with Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier already at the club he is struggling to get a game at Spurs.

Wimmer will be hoping to impress Austria fans a little more in his next outing against Slovakia this evening – before attempting to win over the Spurs fans yet again.
