Aurier should be Tottenham’s first-choice right-back

The defender has been impressive of late for Tottenham Hotspur.

There is still much work for Tottenham Hotspur to do in order to secure a top four finish in the Premier League this season but Mauricio Pochettino certainly has a strong squad at his disposal.

Tottenham have greater depth in several positions than they did previously, especially at right-back, where they can call upon Serge Aurier and Kieran Trippier, as well as talented youngster Kyle Walker-Peters.

While Walker-Peters has been on the periphery of proceedings this season, Pochettino has frequently rotated between Aurier and Trippier this season.

Trippier produced some encouraging performances earlier in the campaign but of late Aurier has really stepped up, with his display in the victory over Everton last weekend especially encouraging.

Aurier – who signed for £23million last summer (BBC) – frequently found himself in lots of space against the Toffees and took advantage as he pushed forwards with regularity, on one occasion setting up a goal for Son Heung-min, which set Tottenham on their way to an emphatic 4-0 victory.

Trippier can still have a part to play for Tottenham in the remainder of the campaign, but Aurier deserves to have an extended run in the side and demonstrate that he is capable of performing consistently.

The Ivorian did experience some teething problems earlier in the campaign – he was, for instance, sent off against West Ham United – but he has since shown that he can be a dependable performer and will now look to push on even further.
