Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has singled out Gabriel Martinelli for praise following his latest Arsenal performance against Newcastle United this afternoon.
Arsenal eased to a very comfortable 2-0 victory away at St James’s Park and it was Aubameyang who made the game safe midway through the second half.
The former Borussia Dortmund hitman volleyed home from close range following what was a sensational first-time cross from the 19-year-old attacker out on the left-hand side.
Martinelli had only started five games in all competitions prior to today but Mikel Arteta named him in his first XI today and it was a hell of a way to send a message.
The Brazilian, a £6 million signing two years ago, also terrorised Jacob Murphy during a first-half display that got Arsenal fans excited on Twitter.
And Aubameyang has told BBC Sport that it was just ‘incredible’ from the young man.
He told BBC Sport: “It was a great goal. [Gabriel Martinelli] did incredible work today and he gave me this assist. All credit to him. I was really happy to be back.”
Arsenal have a massive game against Villarreal on Thursday.
Mikel Arteta’s side are 90 minutes from the final but they’re trailing the first leg 2-1 after the midweek defeat in Spain.
There’ll be uproar if the Gunners exit the competition and Arteta doesn’t start Martinelli because, as he has proven again, he is a very, very special talent.
