Last season a lack of goals were one of the main reasons behind Liverpool’s poor league campaign. At this exact point of last season, the Reds had scored just seven goals and they managed to net more than one goal in a game on only 16 occasions in 2015-16.

It was clearly a area that Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff looked to rectify in the summer.

Although we are in the early stages of the 2016-17 campaign, the attack is working like a well-oiled machine. They are currently equal top scorers in the Premier League with Manchester City, sitting on 18 goals, and lead the league in shots on goals per game (19.3) and shots on target per game (7).

A balanced scoring attack has also aided the Reds’ cause so far, with five players scoring three goals or more.

Title challenges in the Premier League have been few and far between for the Reds, but when they have gone close in 2008-09 and 2013-14, too much was left to individual players to score their goals. By being able to spread the scoring load, if one player is having a off day, there are other players that can step up to the mark.

When Liverpool went heartbreakingly close to ending their title drought in 2014, the emphasis was on all-out attack and the defence was something of a afterthought.

That remains a issue to this day, with the Reds still searching for their first clean sheet in the league, but Klopp is a smart enough manager to strike a balance between the the two areas.
