Newcastle United are currently the favourites to be promoted from the Championship.
With the summer transfer window edging closer, we take a look at how Newcastle United’s squad could look next season.
Goalkeeper: Rob Elliot
Elliot proved that he had a role to play at Newcastle last season, and he may well be Rafael Benitez’s number one in the Championship if Tim Krul does leave.
Left-back: Paul Dummett
Left-back was a problem position for Newcastle last season, but Dummett should be a reliable presence in the Championship.
Centre-back: Chancel Mbemba
If Mbemba stays with Newcastle he will be a key player next season.
Centre-back: Steven Caulker / Jamaal Lascelles
Caulker has been linked with Newcastle already, and appears to be one of Benitez’s top targets.
Lascelles, meanwhile, proved his worth towards the back end of last campaign and should be a stand out player in the second tier.
Right-back: Daryl Janmaat
Janmaat’s future at Newcastle is up in the air, but if Benitez has been told he can keep hold of his key players, then he will surely want to keep the Dutchman at St. James’ Park.
Central midfield: Jonjo Shelvey and Lewis Cook
Shelvey looks set to stay with Newcastle, and will be a real asset in the Championship.
Cook, meanwhile, has already been linked with the Magpies and could be a good option.
Right-wing: Andros Townsend
If Newcastle can keep Townsend he will be one of their most important players next season.
Left-wing: Rolando Aarons
Aarons need game time, and his progression may actually be aided by a season in the Championship, where he is likely to feature in Newcastle’s first-team plans.
Striker: Ross McCormack
Newcastle are on the hunt for a new striker, and Ross McCormack would guarantee goals at this level.
Striker: Lee Tomlin / Adam Armstrong
Tomlin has already been linked with Newcastle, as Benitez looks to add creativity to his ranks.
Armstrong is also set to be handed a promotion to the first-team, after his impressive campaign on loan at Coventry City last season.
