According to the Telegraph, La Liga side Atletico Madrid are lining up a summer swoop for West Ham youngster Reece Oxford, and Diego Simeone’s interest in him just goes to make his struggle for game-time at the London Stadium all the more baffling.

The 19-year-old burst on to the scene with the Hammers on the opening day of the 2015/16 campaign when he was just 16.

He was part of the team that won 2-0 away at Arsenal, and demonstrated superb quality, keeping the likes of Mesut Ozil quiet all afternoon.

Oxford went on to make just two more Premier League starts for the remainder of the campaign. The following season he was loaned out to Reading, before spending time in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach this term.

Every time the teenager has put on a West Ham shirt he has impressed, and has drawn comparisons with Rio Ferdinand.

With a club with the stature and reputation of Atletico Madrid now reportedly interested in Oxford, it makes the fact that he has hardly played for the east London outfit all the more baffling.

The 19-year-old can play in central defence, or the deep-lying midfield role, and possesses the kind of talent that should enable him to go on and become one of the best players in England.

If the Hammers really want to move forward, and progress as a football club, they should do everything within their power to keep hold of Oxford, no matter what Atleti offer for his signature, because it could be argued that he is priceless for West Ham and their future.
