Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Real Betis star Nabil Fekir, who Newcastle United were reportedly in talks to sign in January.

According to Foot Mercato, the La Liga giants are looking at potential options should Joao Felix leave the club this summer, with the Portuguese international potentially on the move if a suitable offer comes in for the attacker.

And as per the report, Fekir has emerged as an ideal player to replace Felix at Atletico this summer, with the French international enjoying his most productive season yet with the Seville-based club.

Fekir has been key to Betis’ incredible campaign, with Manuel Pellegrini’s side sitting fifth in the La Liga standings and just one point off Atletico in fourth, with the 28-year-old bagging ten goals and nine assists in all competitions this season.

And his form has caught the eye of Newcastle, who according to Foot Mercato, were in talks to sign Fekir from as early as October up until the January transfer window, though a deal never materialised.

With a release clause of €100m (£83m), signing Fekir would be a huge financial undertaking for any side this summer, though with Newcastle in the money and Atletico potentially having cash to spend, a transfer battle could ignite in the coming weeks.

Atletico and Newcastle could be hard to choose between for Fekir

Labelled as a ‘genius’ by Betis’ official Twitter account, Fekir leaving this summer feels like an unlikely transfer given the massive season the club are currently experiencing.

Moreover, choosing between Atletico and Newcastle would be a hard decision for Fekir given his status at Betis, with the Frenchman leading the Andalusian club to heights they have not experienced in some time.
