The Philadelphia Union got their MLS Is Back Tournament off to a perfect start with victory over New York City FC – inspired by one man in-particular.

Andre Blake’s stand-out performance was a significant reason for Philadelphia keeping a talented NYCFC team at bay.

The Union took the lead in the 63rd minute, through the game-winning goal from captain Alejandro Bedoya. For the remainder of the game, NYCFC were unable to find the back of Blake’s net, despite having the majority of possession and many chances to equalize.

Blake, who wore the name of George Floyd on the back of his jersey, made several top quality stops to deny NYC’s forward line. Despite, the Cityzens’ applying plenty of late pressure, the Jamaica international almost single-handedly kept his team in the lead.

After being drafted number one overall pick in the 2014 SuperDraft, Blake has been one of the league’s most consistent performers. The May Pen native has made more than 120 appearances for Philadelphia and was named 2016 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

The in-game form of the goalkeeper against New York did not go unnoticed by viewers, with many taking to Twitter to make public their praise for the 29-year-old.

Philadelphia’s next game of the MLS Is Back Tournament, against Inter Miami, is scheduled to take place on Sunday 19 July.
