Speaking on The Big Interview with Graham Hunter, David Moyes has claimed that he should have been the one to replace Marco Silva at Everton in 2019.

Moyes was strongly linked with a return to Goodison Park after Silva’s departure, but, in the end, the Toffees ended up going for Carlo Ancelotti.

Moyes was speaking with Hunter about Ancelotti, and the pair shared that it should have been Moyes taking that job rather than the Italian.

What’s been said?

Moyes and Hunter were discussing Ancelotti and the Everton job came into the conversation.

“I watch elite managers who are on elite salaries who are happy to change clubs every two years. Carlo Ancelotti who has just taken a record to win a title in all of the big five leagues, he does about two years a job. Now, it shouldn’t have been him at Everton, it should have been you, can I put that on the record?” Hunter said.

“Yes, at the time it was yes,” Moyes replied.

“I don’t know how he flipped that, that was a shocker for Everton, I’m putting that on the record,” Hunter concluded.

Hindsight is 20/20

It’s easy now to say that Everton should’ve gone with Moyes over Ancelotti back in 2019 after his successes with West Ham United, but three years ago Moyes’ stock was nowhere near as high as it was now.

He’d had dodgy spells with Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham, and Ancelotti was the clear choice.

Perhaps Everton should’ve forecasted Ancelotti leaving them for a bigger club within two years, but if a manager with that CV is available to you, you have to go for him.

If Everton could turn back time, they probably would’ve gone for Moyes, but hindsight is 20/20.
