Reported West Ham United target Marcelo admitted that he is due to become a free agent in a matter of months, with his Lyon deal coming to an end, while speaking to Foot01.

Back in January 2019, the Hammers were on the verge of paying £20 million for an experienced, 33-year-old centre-half.

Flash forward 18 months, however, and there is a very real chance that David Moyes could get his mitts on a top-class defensive talent for absolutely nothing (Sun).

Despite shining during that stunning run to the Champions League semi-finals last season, Marcelo is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract at Lyon.

And with West Ham putting plans in place for a summer swoop, Rudi Garcia’s side face a race against time if they want to tie down one of their most reliable performers.

“I’m at the end of my contract at the end of the season,” said the former PSV, Hannover and Besiktas stopper.

“We have started talking with (sporting director) Juninho, (general manager) Vincent Ponsot and president Jean-Michel Aulas. I am happy here in Lyon. I hope we will find a good solution.”

Clearly, Marcelo’s top priority is to stay put at a club sitting top of the Ligue 1 table, one point clear of a strangely-inconsistent Paris Saint-Germain.

Lyon could also lose star man Memphis Depay on a free next summer while striker Moussa Dembele, who has also been linked with Lyon, is expected to join Atletico Madrid over the next few days.
