Speaking to OTB, Mark Lawrenson has been discussing Tottenham Hotspur and Antonio Conte’s future at the club.

Conte is a relatively new appointment at Spurs, but already, there are signs of discontent from the Italian.

He made it clear after Tottenham’s defeat to Chelsea that he wasn’t happy with the standard of Spurs’ squad, but despite his complaints, Tottenham haven’t signed a single player this month.

Lawrenson believes that if things don’t change at Spurs, Conte could end up just walking away from the club.

What’s been said about Conte?

Lawrenson says he thinks Conte could leave Spurs in the near future.

“Looking at Tottenham, they look destined to finish about sixth for me, and who’s going to come to Tottenham anyway? At some stage, if nothing happens for Conte, I think he’ll just walk away. We’ve seen it and he’s done it before,” Lawrenson said.

“Could you see Conte walking away before the start of next season?” The host asked.

“Yeah, absolutely. He’s one of those guys that you know if you promise him something, he’s gone to Tottenham knowing that they’re a slightly better than mediocre team, and when he sorted his contract out he knew already that they needed players, so they need to bring those players in. I know every manager says they need players in, but Tottenham do.”

Risk

This was always going to be a risk when Tottenham appointed Conte.

The Italian is one of the most demanding managers in world football, and Daniel Levy has been noted to be a rather frustrating chairman to work under.

Conte has had spats with owners in the past, and as Lawrenson says, if Spurs don’t show enough ambition, the Italian could soon become fed up with his situation in north London.
