Thierry Henry says Raheem Sterling’s goal for Chelsea in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night had a hint about his old Liverpool days about it.

Graham Potter’s Chelsea secured their passage into the next round of the Champions League by beating Dortmund 2-0 in the second leg – after a 1-0 win for the German club in the first leg.

Chelsea started in a blistering fashion, including Sterling going through on goal, and even though he didn’t know he was offside, he just didn’t shoot on goal before being closed down, which proved the lack of confidence he has and this goal-shy team.

But when Sterling did put the ball into the back of the net, it wasn’t pretty, but very much needed.

At first, when the ball was put across the box, he swung at thin air, before proceeding to keep control of the ball, knocking it past an opposition player and then firing the ball into the back of the net from inside of the box of crowded players.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry hilariously stated that all three phases of Sterling’s finish had a bit of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea about it, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (07/03/23 at 10:20 pm).

“The first contact of the ball isn’t great, let’s be honest,” said Henry. “That’s a bit of chance after when he does dribble and get the bounce, the lucky bounce, shall I say? Then he finishes it.”

Jamie Carragher then added: “I think you described it really well off-air. It was like watching the finish, it was like watching…”

Henry responded: “The first one was when he was at Liverpool. The way he finished that, then a bit of Man City (the dribble) and now he is at Chelsea and he finished it.”

STERLING’S STRUGGLES

In the summer, the 28-year-old decided to leave Manchester City to open a new chapter in his career and he secured a £49 million transfer to Stamford Bridge (BBC Sport).

It’s fair to say it has been a struggle for the England international, but he isn’t the only one in that boat in West London.

Sterling has managed only four Premier League goals in 18 Premier League games, but he does have three in the Champions League and his latest goal will give him that lift that he has been looking for.
