Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in signing Besiktas defender and Euroa 2016 winner Pepe this summer for a bargain fee of £6million – but Everton must put up a fight.

Turkish outlet Fanatik claim the 35-year-old former Real Madrid defender is a target for both Wolves and former club FC Porto this summer, with only a year remaining on his Besiktas contract.

Wolves have already astounded the Premier League by announcing huge deals for Portuguese stalwarts Joao Moutinho and Rui Patricio, as well as signing Mexico’s number one striker Raul Jimenez from Benfica on loan.

Now, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are said to be considering a move for veteran defender Pepe to spearhead their bid to remain in the Premier League next season – but Everton could do with him more so.

The Toffees are in desperate need of a central defender this summer, with Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka’s failing to prove that age is just a number last season. That leaves just Michael Keane as an option at centre-back.

Everton spent big last summer and have just splashed out £40million on Richarlison, so a bargain £6million move for a defender with plenty of years left in him at the top level could be considered favourable.

Pepe is exactly that, as he showed at Euro 2016 and the most recent World Cup that he is still one of the best defenders in the world. Indeed, the Euro 2016 champion even scored in the World Cup Round of 16, only to lose 2-1 to Uruguay.

With Marco Silva also being Portuguese, Everton must convince Pepe to choose Goodison Park over the Molineux in what would be a superb move for The Toffees in their bid to gain European football next term.
