Michal Krmencik is on the radar of Wolves and Aston Villa but Celtic should be considering the Czech striker too.
On initial inspection, there’s no real reason for Celtic to make a new striker a priority in January. Yet, Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele have both spent time on the sidelines with injuries this season, leaving Brendan Rodgers to rely on James Forrest, Tom Rogic or Scott Sinclair in an unfamiliar false nine role.
With the Scotsman reporting that the seldom-seen Odsonne Edouard is unlikely to stay at Celtic once his loan spell from PSG expires, it suddenly becomes clear why Rodgers is seemingly keen to improve his attacking options in the New Year.
So far, Astana striker Patrick Twumasi has been linked, per Ghana Sports Online, while the Daily Record claimed they have offered a contract to Dnipro’s Ukrainian hitman Artem Dovbyk.
And with Croatian publication Jutarnji List claiming that prolific Victoria Plzen striker Michal Krmencik, a target for Aston Villa and Wolves, could be available for as little as £2.7 million, surely Celtic should be glancing in his direction.
The 24-year-old is one of the rising stars of Czech football and even has six goals in ten games for the international side. But that pales in comparison to his non-stop prolificity for Plzen in recent months.
So far this season, the 6ft 2ins Krmencik has netted nine goals in 13 league games this season and has three in three in the Europa League – including two in a Man of the Match performance in Plzen’s 4-1 thrashing of Swiss side FC Lugano earlier this month.
And this impressive performances in Europe should intrigue a Celtic side who want to improve their performances on the continent. And, at just £2.7 million, he is a potential bargain buy that a striker-searching Celtic should at least consider.
Championship league leaders Wolves would surely be a tempting option for the impressive striker. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side clearly need some support for Leo Bonatini and the Chinese-funded Midland giants would have no trouble paying Krmencik’s transfer fee.
But would the prospect of league titles and Champions League football make Celtic a more tempting destination?
