Tottenham Hotspur have a new goalkeeper and he may have a big role to play further down the line.
As reported by the BBC, Tottenham Hotspur recently completed a deal to bring Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to North London on a five-year deal, and let’s be honest, it was a pretty uninspiring addition.
What Tottenham needed was strikers and wingers and what they got was a third-choice ‘keeper deemed surplus to requirements at St. Mary’s.
But could the 25-year-old ultimately prove his worth under Mauricio Pochettino – a man he knows well from their time together on the South Coast?
After all, the Argentine’s long-term deal suggests there is a plan for a player who is yet to prove his worth in the top flight.
As Pau Lopez will testify, being third-choice goalkeeper at Tottenham guarantees little more than some run-outs with the under-23s, but Michel Vorm has just a year left on his current deal and looks likely to move on in pursuit of regular first-team football in 2018.
That would leave Gazzaniga as back-up to Hugo Lloris, and at 30, it remains to be seen how long the French international will remain in North London.
Tottenham’s new stopper will have sacrificed immediate first-team football in the knowledge that his patience could be rewarded in some style if he repays his manager’s faith.
After all, Gazzaniga did a decent job on loan at Rayo Valecano last season, keeping 12 clean sheets in 34 matches and noticeably improving as the campaign went on.
Tottenham’s new addition may have been playing in the second tier of Spanish football, but he proved his worth and if he develops as some expect, this uninspiring signing could one day be Spurs’ number one.
