‘At a certain point’: Gary Neville suggests Newcastle may hire manager PIF have wanted for years

Speaking on The Overlap, Gary Neville has been discussing Mauricio Pochettino’s future and a potential move to Newcastle United.

Like many pundits, Neville is of the opinion that Newcastle will eventually have to move on from Eddie Howe when the time comes for the Magpies to truly challenge for the top honours, and he can see United moving for someone like Pochettino.

Indeed, with the Argentine currently out of a job, Neville says that the ex-PSG boss will either have to wait for a top six job to become available or for the Newcastle job to come up.

Neville spoke about Pochettino.

“He’ll have to wait for one of the top six to become available. He’ll have to wait for a Newcastle or a top six job to become available,” Neville said when asked about Pochettino’s next step.

“I think the next manager of Newcastle, Eddie Howe will do a job for a couple of years at Newcastle, maybe longer, but at a certain point they’ll bring in a manager who will be a Pochettino or it’ll be someone different.”

This is a move that would make a lot of sense in the future. After all, PIF have been admirers of Pochettino for quite some time.

Indeed, back in 2020 when Saudi takeover rumours were bubbling under the surface it was reported that Newcastle’s then prospective new owners had plans to hire Pochettino if they’d gotten their hands on the St James’ Park outfit at the time.

Of course, the deal didn’t go through at the time and Pochettino was out of their reach by 2021 as he was the PSG manager, but now that he’s back on the market, he could be an option if the Magpies decide to move on from Howe.
