Finding a quality player who boasts European experience and international caps for a figure less than £10million these days is a rarity. That’s why Celtic have to sign Atalanta defender Timothy Castagne.

The Daily Record claim Celtic are preparing a £6million offer to land the 23-year-old, who has two caps for Belgium and has played 19 times in both the Europa League and the Champions League.

An exciting right-back, Castagne has goals in his locker and is more than capable of swinging in a cross for attackers to get on the end of. He has scored twice and created four more in 39 Atalanta appearances.

The Hoops need a new right-back. Mikael Lustig is set to see his contract expire at Parkhead, while Cristian Gamboa is nowhere near good enough to be the club’s replacement.

Youngster Anthony Ralston, 20, has impressed since coming into the side in recent matches, but he is still not the calibre of player fans want to be taking the team forward. They want players capable of impressing on the European stage.

Signing Castagne would solve a problem area for Rodgers, but more importantly he is the kind of player fans want to see their club sign. He has the experience, the international appearances and bundles of quality required.

At just £6million, the former Genk defender is the perfect January signing for Celtic and Rodgers. His fee is somewhat lower than expected for a player of his standard, and it would help the Hoops save money to strengthen elsewhere.

Castagne is an absolute must in the January transfer window, ahead of Celtic’s round of 32 Europa League clash against Valencia in February.
