Berge is being linked to Spurs once again, as a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele.
Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium is reportedly set to cost a whopping £637million and it leaves Mauricio Pochettino with little manoeuvrability in the transfer market – so Sander Berge is exactly what Spurs need.
TeamTalk claim Spurs are leading the way in the race to sign the 20-year-old colossus, with Arsenal, Everton and West Ham United all said to be looking to rival Pochettino’s side for the Genk starlet.
Berge, who stands at a lofty 6ft 4in, already has 62 appearances for Genk and 43 for Valerenga under his belt – performing to a consistent basis that is expected of someone much older.
Spurs have to be on the lookout for bargains and the club will have to rely on their scouting network, with English talent arguably overpriced in today’s market. The club have been scouting Berge since he was 16.
Now, the report claims Spurs could sign Berge for a fee of just £13.7million and with Mousa Dembele’s future still in doubt as his contract ends at the end of the season, that is an excellent price for a player of Berge’s quality and potential.
The stadium cost is arguably to blame for Spurs failing to sign any players in January, and for the next season or two it may be difficult for Pochettino to spend big on players.
Landing a player such as Berge for the bargain price of £13.7million is the perfect January buy, not only because he replaces Dembele who could be off to Asia, but because it keeps Spurs’ finances in check.
Pochettino simply has to table an offer for the Norwegian wonderkid in January, or regret failing to sign him and watch his value sky rocket at Genk or indeed another club.
