Rangers have placed a £1.25m price-tag on Nottingham Forest target James Tavernier, but should Sunderland show interest?

A report from the Daily Record gives a list of the Rangers players manager Pedro Caixinha will allow to leave this summer as he plans an overhaul of his squad.

Among those are right-back James Tavernier, who according to the article has impressed Caixinha this season but will be allowed to exit Ibrox should his £1.25m valuation be met.

The Nottingham Post reported shortly after former Gers boss Mark Warburton took charge at the City Ground that Nottingham Forest were looking to sign the defender this summer.

So while this latest development seems to add weight to a Warburton and Taverner reunion, perhaps other Sky Bet Championship clubs should not pass up the deal too willingly.

For example, following their relegation from the Premier League, Sunderland will be looking to make changes to their squad and with Javier Manquillo returning to Atletico Madrid and Donald Love failing to impress since a move from Manchester United, it means 30-year-old Billy Jones is their only decent choice at right-back.

Therefore recruitment in the position is likely and while Tavernier’s history as a Newcastle United youth team player may not endear him too greatly to the Stadium of Light faithful, his age and experience in both Scottish and English football might give the Black Cats something to think about.
