Jamie Carragher told CBS’ Champions League coverage (17/03/21 at 10:50 pm) that Steven Gerrard’s record in Europe with Rangers is ‘astonishing’.

The Anfield legend also shared that he spoke to his former teammate before Rangers were crowned champions last week.

Rangers go into tonight’s Europa League showdown with Slavia Prague knowing a clean sheet will do the job after they drew the away leg 1-1 against the Czech champions.

Carragher shared his thoughts on the Gers and how they have potentially been ‘more impressive’ in Europe than in the Premiership this season.

“No, (I haven’t spoken to him) about this game,” said Carragher. “I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago when the title was on the line and they obviously got across the line.

“His record in Europe is astonishing. He has actually won more games in Europe than any other Rangers manager in history. The famous Walter Smith got to a Europa League final with Rangers. He got to a quarter or semi-final with Rangers in the Champions League, I think.

“So a great history in Europe. What he has done in Europe is as impressive, if not more impressive than what he has done this season in terms of winning the league.

“This European run, starting in his first season, has brought some funds into the club that meant he could invest into the team and make them what they are right now.

“I think they will fancy themselves to go through. The away goal and then, of course, there is one man (Allan McGregor) to thank from that first leg.”

As a player, Gerrard’s record in Europe was incredible and it’s something he has clearly transcended into his management.

All those experiences from that goal against Olympiakos in 2004 to that final against AC Milan in Istanbul.

Gerrard is well aware of how to guide a team through difficult stages on the European stage and he seems to be doing the same with Rangers, who will class themselves as dangerous underdogs if they progress tonight.
