Aston Villa forward Wesley opened his goalscoring account in England on Friday evening.
Aston Villa striker Wesley has already proven Dean Smith correct, after his defence of the striker last week.
Wesley’s performances in Villa’s first two matches came under question, after he failed to hit the back of the net.
The Brazilian showed signs that he was struggling to adapt to life in the Premier League.
The likes of Paul Ince, Michael Owen and Stan Collymore all spoke out and questioned Wesley.
But Smith quickly defended his side’s new striker in the Guardian.
“There have been questions about him playing in the Premier League but he played in the Champions League last season – he’s not too shabby,” the Villa boss said.
“He’s settled straight away. I can see that every day in training. He’s shown potential in his performances so far and that potential will come through.”
And Wesley’s performance against Everton proved once and for all that he can make an impact in England.
Villa’s most expensive summer signing scored his side’s first goal of the game, and his overall performance was so encouraging.
Wesley dominated Everton’s defence physically, as he occupied both Michael Keane and Yerry Mina.
If Wesley can continue to put in performances of that quality then he could be the finest striker to play for Villa for many a year.
And it seems that Smith was correct in suggesting that Wesley had been written off far too quickly by many observers.
