Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham has enjoyed a successful season at Aston Villa with Newcastle United showing reported interest.
From an individual standpoint, Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham has had an outstanding season at Aston Villa and it isn’t a surprise to see clubs like Newcastle interested in his services.
The Northen Echo have claimed that Newcastle will make a move for the 21-year-old striker if Villa lose their Championship play-off showdown against Derby on Monday afternoon at Wembley.
It is said that during the summer of 2017, Newcastle wanted to sign the highly-rated Chelsea youth product, but he opted to join Swansea instead as they are hoping to make another move for him this summer.
Regardless of what happens to Villa at Wembley, Abraham has played a big part in them reaching the play-off finals by scoring 26 goals [transfermarkt], including during their semi-final clash against West Brom.
During his time at Villa Park, Abraham has showcased his ability to score all of his 26 goals from inside the box, whether they come from open play or from the penalty spot.
Abraham’s movement in the second tier of English football and his ability to constantly put away the simple chances has made him a real threat to opposition defences.
But if he were to move to Newcastle then the talented star would need to show more than just the above. Whilst he has shown that he can drop deep and connect attacks, he doesn’t, at this moment, have the capabilities of holding the ball up for a Rafa Benitez-like team.
Salomon Rondon’s pure strength, work rate off the ball and ability to bully defenders played a part in his success and Newcastle’s comfortable finish in the league.
Someone like Abraham would be a great addition to Newcastle alongside a Rondon, but on his own, he wouldn’t be able to lead the line for such a robust and well-drilled Benitez side.
Added with that, even if he were to find himself in the same team as Rondon at Newcastle, Benitez doesn’t play two up top, so once again he’d be at an disadvantage.
In truth, Abraham is more suited to an attack-minded system where the midfielders are making runs into the box and the wingers are high up the pitch, only for him to finish off the job.
