Aston Villa’s transfer rumour mill has been up and running at a fairly quick rate ever since the final whistle was blown at Wembley on May 27.

The Midlands outfit are now Premier League which means that they can target players of a higher calibre, but the players that have been touted for a move to Villa Park recently have been players from a lower division.

However, Defensor Sporting Club chief Ney Castillo told the Tiempo de Fútbol on Sport 890, broadcast 6th June have claimed that Villa want to sign Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez.

The European hitman scored 13 goals in La Liga last season [transfermarkt] and at the age of 22, he would be a stunning signing if Villa can pull off a deal for his signature.

Whilst Dean Smith and Co. need to be sensible in the summer transfer market by not going overboard, a player like Gomez would light up Villa Park.

During the recently concluded campaign, Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham was Villa’s main goal threat up front, but he has seemingly dropped a hint on his personal Instagram account that he won’t be returning to the club for next season.

With or without Abraham, Villa would have needed attacking reinforcements and their task of finding that striker that can score goals in the Premier League has become even more important now that a settled player in Abraham might not return.

Potentially signing Gomez would add that bite and excitement to Villa’s forward line and increase their chances of maintaining their status in England’s top-flight
