Speaking on talkSPORT, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has pulled Darren Bent up about what he said earlier this month about his finishing.

Bent claimed that Brentford’s Ivan Toney is a better finisher than Watkins on Sky Sports earlier this month, and it’s clear that Watkins wasn’t best pleased with what he said.

Of course, Toney has taken Watkins’ place at Brentford, and comparisons between the pair were always going to be inevitable, but the Villa striker seemingly doesn’t like Bent’s view.

“I was watching the Tottenham game when Brentford were playing and you said about Ivan Toney being a better finisher. How come you think that is?” Watkins asked.

Bent responded: “The variety of his finishing. I’ve watched him for a long time and when I’ve seen him, left foot, right foot – I think he’s just got a little bit more composure.

“I’m not saying he scores more than you, but there’s a couple of finishes of his I’ve gone ‘oh, okay’. I’ve been quite surprised as I didn’t know he had it in his locker. I think it’s minimal, but that was why I said that.”

The debate about whether or not Toney is a better finisher than Watkins is yet to be settled.

You can’t take away Watkins’ achievements this season, after all, he’s netted a hat-trick against Liverpool and a brace against Arsenal since stepping up to the Premier League.

However, Toney is on track to surpass the tally of 25 Championship goals that Watkins scored last season, having hit 16 goals after 24 matches.

Watkins shouldn’t be offended by being compared to Toney, as the ex-Peterborough man is a top striker in his own right.
