Matt Targett officially signed for Aston Villa earlier today.

Club Brugge's Brazilian forward Wesley Moraes celebrates scoring his team's third goal during the UEFA Champions League Group A football match between AS Monaco and Bruges at The 'Louis II'...

Aston Villa wrapped up a deal to sign Matt Targett from Southampton today.

In doing so, Villa completed their fifth permanent signing of the summer transfer window so far.

Another big one, Wesley Moraes, is yet to be ratified by the Premier League, but the Brazilian striker could benefit in a big way from being in the same team as Targett, once the transfer is sealed and delivered.

The 23-year-old is a left-back, so logically there isn’t much link between Targett and Wesley, but there is.

Only three full-backs in the Premier League created more goalscoring chances per 90 minutes than him last season – Lucas Digne, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier.

This is significant because Wesley is a 6’3 tank of a striker, one who is good in the air and his movement in and around the six-yard box can be deadly.

If Targett can deliver the low and high crosses that he did last season, the 22-year-old might be the big winner.
