The Aston Villa striker has scored three goals in as many appearances against Sheffield Wednesday
Aston Villa’s Jonathan Kodjia could have been a Sheffield Wednesday player, had the Owls taken Glenn Roeder’s advice.
Roeder had a spell advising the Yorkshire side in 2015 and, according to a report in Monday’s Sun newspaper (Goals pullout, page 22), earmarked Kodjia, then of Angers, as a possible recruit.
The Ivorian later signed for Bristol City in a £2 million deal (BBC Sport), before moving to Aston Villa a year later for around six times that amount (BBC Sport), and has scored 38 goals in 91 Championship appearances since then – including three in three against Carlos Carvalhal’s side – more than any Wednesday player has managed.
The Owls instead turned to Lucas Joao – and later Gary Hooper – that year, although the twice-capped Portugal international has largely struggled despite experiencing a bright start to his Hillsborough career.
In contrast, Hooper has found the net 26 times in 64 Championship outings for his current employers, and finds himself joint-top of the league’s scoring chart.
Roeder, the former West Ham United, Newcastle United and Norwich City manager, has taken on a similar role at Stevenage since leaving the Owls.
