Aston Villa’s John McGinn comments on Tottenham Hotspur’s defence

Aston Villa were beaten 3-1 by Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, but John McGinn felt that his side could have performed better.

Aston Villa’s John McGinn has admitted to the Birmingham Mail that Tottenham Hotspur’s attacking intent against them left gaps in their defence.

Spurs beat Villa 3-1 on the opening day of the Premier League season, but McGinn caught the eye.

The Scottish midfielder actually put Villa in front as he charged forward from the half way, and cooly slotted the ball beyond Hugo Lloris.

And McGinn believes that if Villa had shown more ambition and belief on the ball then they would have been able to hurt Tottenham again, as there were holes in their backline.

“We need to be a bit more brave and believe in ourselves a bit more,” he said. “As we noticed in the first half, because Spurs are such a good side there are gaps in the defence.

“If we come up against them we need to be a bit braver and believe in ourselves a bit more but we need to be realistic to know that they are a top four side and a team that was in the Champions League final not so long ago.”

Villa put up a good fight against Spurs, but they were undone late on, as fatigue set in.

After McGinn, who was linked with a £50 million move to Manchester United earlier this summer (Scottish Sun), scored, Villa put up a barricade in front of their goal.

It seemed that Dean Smith’s side’s defensive organisation may see them over the line, but a trio of late goals from Tottenham took the three points away from them.

Villa are next in action against Bournemouth at the weekend, while Spurs face Manchester City.
