Aston Villa’s Jed Steer says West Bromwich Albion fans made a mistake

Aston Villa beat West Bromwich Albion on penalties at the Hawthorns on Tuesday evening.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer has told the Daily Mirror that West Bromwich Albion’s fans spurred them on to win at the Hawthorns.

West Brom’s supporters were seen giving Villa’s team bus a hostile reception as they arrived on Tuesday night.

But, rather than intimidate Villa, Steer claims that it inspired his teammates to make sure that they made it through.

“We got a bit of a welcoming party,” the goalkeeper said.

“That just spurred us on even more. We saw how much they wanted it but we wanted it more, so that was quite good to see. We knew it was going to be that sort of atmosphere. It was a great occasion and one that we came out of on the right side.”

Steer was Villa’s hero in the end, as Dean Smith’s side made it through on penalties.

The claret and blues were short of their best against West Brom, but they held their nerve better in the shoot out.

Steer saved two of West Brom’s spot kicks, as Villa eventually made it to Wembley for the second time in as many years.

Villa will now take on Derby County for a place in the Premier League in two weekends’ time.
