Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper are top defenders in their own right, but they’re the only two reliable and recognised centre-backs that Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has.
If the Whites are going to win Premier League promotion, they need at least another one and should Bielsa take a look at Aston Villa’s James Chester?
Chester, who joined the Villans for £8 million in 2016 [Birmingham Mail], has been a big player for the West Midlands side down the years.
But the Welshman spent the second half of last season out injured and Dean Smith’s acquisition of Kortney Hause, combined with a potential permanent deal for Tyrone Mings, means he might just be available.
This is a quality centre-back and one who would undoubtedly improve Leeds’ team – and he’s fit again, finally.
The club’s official Twitter account revealed in April that the former West Brom star had returned to training.
Still, he’s a brilliant Championship defender and if Aston Villa are willing to part company with him, United should be top of the queue.
Chester is also out of contract at Bodymoor Heath next summer, meaning that if Smith doesn’t sell this summer, he may lose him for free a year from now.
