Aston Villa star Jack Grealish has told The Telegraph that he would not have settled for a squad player at Tottenham Hotspur.

Grealish, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, has revealed that Tottenham wanted to sign him from Championship side Villa in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old has also stated that he is confident that he would have been fighting for a place in manager Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup within two months.

According to The Telegraph, Spurs wanted to sign Grealish from Villa for £25 million in the summer transfer window.

Grealish told The Telegraph: “Of course, there’s going to be disappointment there. You’ve just got to look at what Spurs have done this season. They’ve beaten Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford, they’re playing Barcelona in the Champions League next week.

“I felt that if I’d gone there I could have maybe been in the England squad by the end of the year. I would never have gone there just to make up the numbers.

“I would have been a squad player, obviously, because you have to look at how good their players are. But I genuinely thought that after a month or two of training, I could have really made an impact.”

New contract

Grealish has recently signed a new five-year contract with Villa, and it must be great news for the Villa Park faithful.

The 23-year-old is arguably the most talented player in the current Villa squad, and he will be a key player in Steve Bruce’s side quest to finish in the top six of the Championship this season.

The young attacker has provided one assist in nine Championship appearances for Villa so far this season, according to WhoScored.

According to The Telegraph, Grealish is earning £40,000 per week as salary at Villa after his new deal.
