The midfielder was impressive in the 2-0 win over Norwich City.
Saturday’s 2-0 win over Norwich City was one of the better afternoons for Aston Villa this season.
In what has been a dreadful campaign so far, in which relegation looks a certainty, there have been few solid defensive displays, with the Villans having conceded 40 goals in 25 games so far.
The win over the Canaries was a change in that though as they put on a resolute defensive showing to secure a vital three points.
Key to that was midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who arguably put on one of his best displays since joining the summer to help his side to victory.
And it transpires it was a particularly impressive afternoon from him, as he managed to top two key defensive stats in the Premier League this weekend.
| Position | Team | Match | Interception Won | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Idrissa Gueye | MF | Aston Villa | Aston Villa vs Norwich | 8 | 90 |
| Craig Cathcart | DF | Watford | Tottenham vs Watford | 7 | 90 |
| Martín Demichelis | DF | Man City | Man City vs Leicester | 7 | 90 |
The first of those was the interceptions column, as he posted eight in total, the highest number of anyone in the Premier League this past weekend.
He was similarly impressive when it came to recovering the ball, as he posted 18 ball recoveries across 90 minutes on the pitch, a tally far above anyone else, with Liverpool’s Mahmadou Sakho the closest to him on 13.
| Position | Team | Match | Ball Recovery | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Idrissa Gueye | MF | Aston Villa | Aston Villa vs Norwich | 18 | 90 |
| Mamadou Sakho | DF | Liverpool | Liverpool vs Sunderland | 13 | 90 |
| Jonny Howson | MF | Norwich | Aston Villa vs Norwich | 12 | 90 |
An impressive display from Gueye then, who Remi Garde will be hoping can be equally impressive in the 13 games remaining as they try to secure an unlikely escape from relegation.
