Aston Villa’s Christian Purslow promises attacking football on their Premier League return.
Christian Purslow has claimed that Aston Villa boss Dean Smith will be setting up to win every single game – even when they’re visiting Premier League champions Manchester City.
The Villans are gearing up for their return to the top flight after a three-year absence, having won promotion via the playoffs in May.
Aston Villa were comfortably the Championship’s most formidable team in the final few months of last season and, in theory, they should be well equipped for life in the top tier.
Smith has brought eight new players to Bodymoor Heath this summer, including a club-record £22 million signing of Brazilian striker Wesley.
And the Villans’ chief executive Purslow has stated that Smith will be out to win every game of football this season.
Speaking to a Q & A event in Minnesota, as transcribed by Under a Gas Lit Lamp, he said: “Dean thinks we should win every game of football. He thinks if they score three, we’ll score four. Be ready guys, he’s not going to go away at Manchester City and try and play for a nil-nil. Every game is play to win.”
It’s a very exciting suggestion by Purslow, in theory.
The reality is that it’ll be very difficult for Aston Villa to out-score quite a lot of teams, especially considering that Wesley, their main source of goals you’d hope, has never kicked a ball in England yet.
It’s very possible that Smith will realise that a gung-ho strategy every week leaves the team vulnerable to humiliation.
Smith’s side kick off their pre-season calendar with a clash against Minnesota in the early hours of Thursday morning.
