John Terry’s star power intimidated the Aston Villa new boy it seems.
Bjorn Engels has admitted that he was intimidated by meeting John Terry after originally signing for Aston Villa this summer.
The Belgium centre-back was a £9 million signing by the Villans in July. [Sky Sports].
Engels will be working under one of the most distinguished defenders of the last 30 years in Terry, who is Aston Villa manager Dean Smith’s assistant.
The Chelsea icon won 15 major trophies during his spell in West London, including five Premier League crowns and a Champions League.
And the Aston Villa new boy concedes that he had a degree of trepidation about meeting him.
He told HLN: “I get a lot of confidence from the manager, but also from Terry. Unbelievable, isn’t it? When I arrived, I was a bit scared. You look up to him, such a legend. You expect him to step onto a training field with an attitude of ‘who are you’, but he is not at all condescending. Completely the opposite even. “
If his Premier League debut is anything to go by, Engels need not fear judgement from Terry.
The Aston Villa ace was exceptional on Saturday despite Smith’s side ultimately losing 3-1 at Tottenham, who scored three times in the final 17 minutes.
Up until then, Engels and Tyrone Mings were superb in central defence and if the pair can replicate that standard on a regular basis, the Villans will be fine this season.
