Aston Villa central defender Bjorn Engels has told The Birmingham Mail that he finds it very intense in the Premier League.

Engels joined Villa from Reims in the summer transfer window for a fee reported by The Mirror to be worth £8 million.

The 24-year-old central defender has played in both of the Villans’ Premier League games – against Tottenham Hotspur at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and against Bournemouth at Villa Park.

The Belgian defender has said that the intensity of the Premier League is new to him.

Engels told The Birmingham Mail: “It was the same [against Spurs]. There is big intensity every minute.

“You don’t have any time to rest. It is something new for me. Every second you need to be sharp. It is the best league in the world and we need to be ready.”

Improvement needed

Much was expected of Villa when they clinched promotion to the Premier League, and subsequent signings of a number of players in the summer transfer window raised the expectations.

However, the Villans have failed to make an immediate impact in the top flight of English football, and it is clear that Dean Smith’s side need to improve and step up.

Having lost to Tottenham and Bournemouth, Villa will have to pick up maximum points against Everton on Friday evening.
