Aston Villa are reportedly reluctant to hand Albert Adomah a new contract at Villa Park.
With 14 goals under his belt last season, it may have surprised some outsiders when Birmingham Live reported earlier in the month that Aston Villa were reluctant to offer Albert Adomah a new contract despite plans for talks being initially scheduled for the end of the last campaign.
The Villans are in a strong position regarding the 30-year-old’s future, with his current deal – which runs out this summer – including a clause that would allow Villa to extend the terms by a further year.
Nevertheless, some on the outside would have expected the club to show plenty of desire to get Adomah tied down for longer given that his form was often irresistible last term.
But it appears a lot easier to understand Villa’s stance regarding a new deal after Steve Bruce’s side scraped through to the next round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, beating Yeovil Town 1-0 at Huish Park.
Adomah was poor against the League Two side, and Villa needed a late goal from Conor Hourihane to book their place in the second round of the competition.
It comes off the back of a run of form that has seen the former Middlesbrough man not find the back of the net since March. He is also yet to provide an assist in the early stages of this term.
If he rediscovers his previous form, then it would unquestionably be worthwhile for Villa to agree a new contract with the winger. But as things stand, Villa appear to be doing the right thing by holding fire on any talks – and his display at Yeovil surely highlighted that fact emphatically.
