However, after picking up only two wins between the turn of the year and March, Aston Villa parted ways with Garde, who had only been at the club since November, leaving Eric Black in charge until the end of the season.

With Randy Lerner successfully selling the club over the summer, Aston Villa found themselves under new ownership at the start of the 16/17 season, now run by Chinese businessman, Dr Tony Xia.

With the new financial backing, Roberto Di Matteo was able to strengthen his side over the summer, bringing in players like Ross McCormack, Albert Adomah and Jonathan Kodjia.
